Length: 42 cm 17 inches. Catch, photograph, and identification courtesy of Barry Mastro, Escondido, California. A fillet contaminated with an unknown parasite.
Note: By appearance, this is the same parasite found in the fillets of the Pacific Porgy, Calamus brachysomus , and I do not recommend the human consumption of a fish with this contamination. The Pacific Sierra, Scomberomorus sierra, is one of the most common members of the Mackerel or Scombridae Family , and is known in Mexico as sierra del Pacifico.
Globally, there are eighteen species in the genus Scomberomorus , of which five are found in Mexican waters, three in the Atlantic and two in the Pacific Ocean. The Pacific Sierra has an elongated fusiform strongly compressed body.
They are bronze-green to bluish-black dorsally and transition to silver-white ventrally. Their sides have 3 to 8 rows of small round orange spots, the majority being below the lateral line. Their anal fin is white; the outer half of their first dorsal fin is black; their second dorsal fin, set close to the first dorsal fin, is yellowish with a black margin; and their pectoral fins are dusky.
They have a short snout. Their mouth is equipped with a set of strongly compressed teeth that are triangular and knife-like. Their anal fin has 16 to 21 rays followed by 7 to 10 finlets; their caudal fin is forked; their dorsal fin has 15 to 18 spines and 16 to 19 rays followed by 7 to 10 finlets; and, their pelvic fins are relatively long.
Its mouth has a set of strong teeth which are sharp as a knife and triangular in shape. This species of fish is an aggressive eater. Pacific Sierras love to prey on herrings, clupeids, and anchovies. Pacific Sierras can measure up to 39 inches and weigh 18 pounds. Despite its wide distribution, Pacific Sierra fishing is regulated.
Recreational anglers can catch only 10 fishes per bag daily in certain parts of the US. Apart from that, Pacific Sierras cannot be caught all-year round; they are seasonal. Artificial lures and natural baits can both be used to catch Pacific Sierras, but a wire leader is a must due to their very sharp teeth they often bite back. Light tackle may not be enough. Thread starter honyakushaJD Start date May 23, I am translating a list of different fish types. Any idea what the type of fish "sierra" is in English? It depends on where it is found.
